Frequently asked questions
-
Absolutely! We have worked on several projects where the raw metal and stones of necklaces and rings have been combined to create a new piece. You don’t have to use every part of an older piece and can select the bits you like for the new piece. On the other hand, we can add more metals or stones if needed.

At Featherstones, we love to problem-solve! We have previously made hinged rings that open and shut to clasp safely around a finger without needing to slip it on past your knuckles. Come and speak to us if you need something similar.
-
Yes, we can! We can use ‘speed bumps’: small semi-spheres on the inside of the ring which add a bit of texture to the inner ring surface to stop it spinning around. The ring can be adjusted to ensure it still fits comfortably without affecting the way it looks.

Active jobs can cause significant wear on jewellery. Diamonds are the hardest, followed by rubies and sapphires. Opals and emeralds are significantly softer and will scratch far more easily. However, we would recommend taking off your jewellery before undertaking work that could damage it. We can offer slender necklace chains for you to secure your rings whenever you need to work with your hands. If you do have an active job we recommend getting your jewellery checked regularly to check all of the stone settings are still secure. You don’t want to lose a stone!
-
The most popular stone for an engagement ring is a diamond (natural or lab-grown). Diamonds are the hardest stone and as engagement rings will be work every day, they can be the most resilient. However, there is no reason you can’t pick whichever stone you or your partner love most! We can make sure that your ring has the right type of stone setting to protect your stone of choice as best as possible.

We offer both hand and machine engraving services, however this is not usually performed on site. We work with a number of well-respected partners with whom we have built strong, established relationships.

The discount must be determined by the jewellery designer as every piece is unique. This involves deducting the value of contributed raw metals from the total investment of the new design. Our experts assess metal purity and value it based on market rates. Whether recycled or sentimentally preserved, the process is carefully followed. Stones, while not bought back, can be seamlessly set into your renewed masterpiece.
-
Pop down to the workshop and we can find out your finger size in minutes! We have a range of tester rings to try on to make sure we get a perfect fit. If you can’t make it down to our workshop we can send a small selection of plastic rings for you to try and return to us.

There is no set limit. The minimum cost for a bespoke gold or platinum engagement ring from Featherstones jewellery is £700. Apart from this, you can spend as much or as little as you want. We will work with you to create a ring on your budget that your partner will treasure for years to come.
-
This is entirely down to personal choice! We recognise it can be overwhelming to decide on a ring design and we will be here to help every step of the way. Certain stones lend themselves to a particular shape. The right shape can also depend on the setting style you prefer. While you speak with our advisor we will advise you on every aspect.
-
Obviously this will depend on the complexity of your piece but usually allowing 4-8 weeks once a design has been finalised gives us ample time to bring your design to life.

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, just made in the lab instead of forming naturally. Unless you have special lab equipment, it is impossible to tell a lab-grown diamond from a natural diamond. In terms of clarity, lab-grown diamonds can often be superior for the same cost (lab-grown diamonds can be as little as 60% of the cost of a natural diamond). Lab-grown diamonds are as hard as natural diamonds and offer the same shine and sparkle. All our lab-grown diamonds will come with a certificate of authenticity for peace of mind.
